Distinction magazine claims this about the artist who created this chair: “James DeWulf is raising the bar on concrete design both visually and ecologically with his handmade furnishings.” The day that I discovered this chair at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NY, I tried out hundreds of chairs. I was shocked when I found this to be, quite literally, the most comfortable chair I sat in all day! (The secret, I discovered, was an ergonomically designed recess, carved into the back of the chair, which the cushion would conform to when leaned upon). The lush green color and texture of the cement add a surprising element of sensuality to the chair, while its simple, blocky geometry and weight add a sense calm stability and permanence. Due to its 700 pound weight, it is perfect for commercial use and in places where you don’t want chairs being moved around. Nevertheless, the chair is fairly easy to move around when needed by tilting it onto a dolly and rolling. The cushions are removable and can be leaned with a garden hose. Also available in an natural grey cement color.
