This unique quilted cowhide rug was conceived by reinterpreting the characteristics of the noble material of leather. Looking like an overgrown Eero Aarino “Pastil Chair” that has been tossed about by the waves, etched, fossilized and flung up onto the beach, these amusing “Sand Poufs” look like they are made of sand or stone. In fact, however, they are made of resin, so are suitable for outdoor use. What a playful addition these would make for any poolside or patio! They would also make intriguing planters, especially when planted with Leucoryum, a type of lush green moss, appropriately named Cushion Moss, because it grows in soft, ball-like clumps.

While the featured khaki green color is, in our opinion, the most luscious, there’s a wide variety of fabulous other colors to choose from (black, white, chocolate, grey, purple, beige, turquoise, red, pink-grey, orange, bright green and yellow). But the real appeal of these wonderful planters lies in their intriguing, asymmetrical geometric forms which were inspired by roughly cut stones.

By aligning the sides of these planters in different ways, an infinite number of settings can be created, whether by grouping planters of the same size in a straight line or by juxtaposing planters of different sizes into sculptural clumps. The 3 different sizes can accommodate the  planting of anything from a single plant to bunches of tall grass to trees. The small planter would also make a great place to hold magazines, while the medium one could be used at parties as a large ice-bucket to keep bottles cold. The large one would be fabulous filled with stalks of willowy bamboo.

Distinction magazine claims this about the artist who created this chair: “James DeWulf is raising the bar on concrete design both visually and ecologically with his handmade furnishings.” The day that I discovered this chair at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NY, I tried out hundreds of chairs. I was shocked when I found this to be, quite literally, the most comfortable chair I sat in all day! (The secret, I discovered, was an ergonomically designed recess, carved into the back of the chair, which the cushion would conform to when leaned upon). The lush green color and texture of the cement add a surprising element of sensuality to the chair, while its simple, blocky geometry and weight add a sense calm stability and permanence. Due to its 700 pound weight, it is perfect for commercial use and in places where you don’t want chairs being moved around. Nevertheless, the chair is fairly easy to move around when needed by tilting it onto a dolly and rolling. The cushions are removable and can be leaned with a garden hose. Also available in an natural grey cement color.

This wonderfully organic looking log stool by Jason Phillips is actually made of resin, so can handle the elements outdoors. It’s coloration and texture almost appear to be a cross between stone and driftwood, as the “bark” has all been stripped away..It’s the perfect height to act as either a side table to put a drink on, or as a stool when extra guests show up.
